Problem or Project? The Choice is Yours

Jan 13, 2025

“In the study of truth, we talk often about the power of words. It is important to put into words only the verbal statements you want to see manifest in your life. For instance, the word ‘problem.’ You say, ‘I have a problem.’ A much better word to employ when referring to some sort of challenge is ‘project’.

’Note what happens when you say, ‘I have this project.’ It makes all the difference in the world. The word project suggests a positive endeavor of development… We tackle a project with vigor and imagination and with the conviction that it will be done.”

                                                                                                                               - Eric Butterworth

In life and business, it’s not what happens to us that defines us—it’s how we respond. This simple truth is the foundation of growth, resilience, and ultimately, success.

As we reflect on the challenges we faced in 2024, many of us may feel it was a year full of unexpected hurdles. For some, the difficulties have lingered into the new year. But here’s the secret: what truly matters isn’t the obstacle itself—it’s how we approach it, what we choose to make of it.

I was recently reflecting with a group of close friends, and we all shared stories of our struggles over the past year. But as we dug deeper, we discovered something remarkable: those very struggles also brought unexpected gifts, insights, and blessings. Even the toughest moments were stepping-stones to growth.

This insight reminds me of a powerful quote from one of my mentors, Dr. Wayne Dyer:

"When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."

This shift in perspective is at the heart of a simple but life-changing concept from Eric Butterworth: turning a “problem” into a “project.” Imagine the possibilities if we viewed every challenge as an opportunity—a chance to make progress, grow, and thrive.

So, how can you shift your perspective and turn your biggest challenges into your most powerful projects?

Here are four key strategies that will not only help you navigate challenges with confidence but also empower you to transform them into stepping-stones for success:

1) Pause, Breathe, and Ask: What’s Really Happening?

In the face of a challenge, our first reaction is often fear. We imagine the worst-case scenario, and our minds go into overdrive with worst-possible outcomes. These reactions are natural—they come from a primal instinct to protect ourselves. But here’s the truth: the fear itself doesn’t serve us.

Instead of succumbing to the instinct to catastrophize, pause. Take a breath. Ask yourself: What is truly happening here, without the drama? Get out of your head and into reality. This pause allows you to move from reaction to rational thinking, so you can see your options clearly and make empowered decisions moving forward.

2) Embrace the Question: What Wants to Happen?

In times of uncertainty, especially after something unexpected disrupts our plans, we often struggle with a desire to control the outcome. But life doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is let go and embrace what is wanting to emerge from the situation.

Think back to the lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. While many plans fell apart, those who adapted and pivoted found new opportunities for growth—often in ways they never imagined. By surrendering to what wanted to happen, they discovered new paths to success.

As a good friend reminded me once,

"We must be stubborn in our goals, but flexible in our methods.”

By releasing the need for perfection and accepting the flow of life, you open yourself up to new possibilities and a deeper sense of resilience. This is how projects are born.

3) Take the First Right Step

Often, the greatest obstacle to taking action is simply feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of the challenge. When faced with a daunting project, it’s easy to freeze.

But here’s the secret: all progress begins with a single step. Think about the last time you built something, cooked a new recipe, or took on a big task. You didn’t start by worrying about the end result—you began with the first step. It was the act of starting that created momentum, opened your mind to new possibilities, and made the next steps clearer.

So, when faced with a “problem,” simply ask: What is the first step I can take right now? Even the smallest action can set things in motion and lead to bigger breakthroughs.

4) Keep Moving Forward: Take the Next Right Step

In any project—especially one that doesn’t come with a step-by-step guide—you won’t always have the full picture. The path may not be clear at the start. But when you take that first step, the next right step will reveal itself.

Trust that the right course of action will unfold as you keep moving forward. This is how great leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators create their successes: not by waiting for everything to be perfect, but by staying committed to the process, taking action, and adjusting as they go.

You’re never alone on this journey. When you step forward in faith and courage, the universe meets you halfway.
